First, Jeffrey Katzenberg badmouths poor 3D conversion. Then, he sort of backtracks. Now comes this interesting little tidbit: DreamWorks is planning to convert the first three Shrek movies for Blu-ray release.

Katzenberg is the CEO of DreamWorks, which also released Monsters vs. Aliens into the theaters and onto Blu-ray in the 3D format.

While at NAB in Las Vegas, Katzenberg disclosed the studio’s plans. However, there is a slight difference. “Our movies exist in digital files to begin with,” said Katzenberg. “To go back and rebuild to a quality 3D experience is not inexpensive, but we are about to achieve a pretty high quality result.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the process involves going back to those digital files and rendering out to another eye. Also, the makers of Shrek are working with the studio on the process.

There is no word on when the first three films will be available on 3D Blu-ray. The final installment, Shrek Forever After, will be released in 3D theaters on May 21, 2010.
