The breakthrough R-972 receiver with Trinnov Optimizer is scheduled to ship on September 10th at an MSRP of $1,799.95, and the new R-774 is slated for September 20 and an MSRP of $849.95. Both products will be on display in booth 1269 at CEDIA Expo in Atlanta, September 10 through 13.
Sherwood Newcastle R-972 A/V Receiver
Making its debut as the flagship receiver in the Sherwood Newcastle line-up, the R-972 may be the most advanced A/V receiver on the planet, thanks to its Trinnov Optimizer Room Correction system. The R-972 is first consumer product to feature the $13,000 Trinnov Optimizer Room Correction system, which, in addition to conventional room correction, performs a unique 3D spatial correction unlike any other available technology. The Trinnov Optimizer recreates the original soundfield heard by the mixing engineer, by remapping sound images to their proper location, both horizontally and vertically, even when speakers are not ideally placed in the listener’s room.
“The R-972 is a true game-changer among audio-video components,” said Jeffrey Hipps, Sherwood’s Sr. VP for Marketing and Product Development. “The holy grail of audio has always been to effectively put the listener in the sound mixer’s studio chair, so he or she can hear the music or film exactly as it sounded in the recording or post-production studio. With the R-972 and Trinnov, that is now possible for the first time in the home. Listeners can place their speakers where they fit into the room and will still hear accurate three-dimensional spatial reproduction.”
Using a four-microphone array, the Trinnov system accurately measures the angle (horizontal) and azimuth (vertical) location of each speaker in three-dimensional space to an accuracy of 1 cm and 2 degrees. It then creates an acoustic map of the room that is used on playback to relocate (remap) the sound so that acoustic images are heard in the original mix location, regardless of the actual physical location of the loudspeakers. Four target frequency response curves and four speaker-remapping targets with choice of film or music speaker configurations give users a wide range of playback choices.
Delivering 100 watts RMS per channel to 7 channels, the R-972 provides lossless Dolby and DTS audio decoding for Blu-Ray discs via dual TI 32-bit DSP chips and is HDMI 1.3 enabled with 1080p video scaling via its Silicon Optix REON processor.
Four HDMI 1.3 inputs and seven analog inputs (3 Component, 4 composite/S-video) can be scaled by the Silicon Optix REON video processor to resolutions up to 1080p. 36-bit “Deep Color” is supported, and a single HDMI 1.3 output interfaces with advanced video displays. The R-972’s dual 32-Bit TI audio DSP chips provide audiophile sound quality with Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD lossless formats.
Setup of the system is fully automated, using the supplied four capsule Trinnov microphone. Full calibration of the system, including channel levels, speaker distances and settings for the Trinnov Optimizer are accomplished with a single click of the remote.
Newcastle’s unique Dual-Mode™ preprogrammed and learning remote control operates in either RF or IR mode, and can even control other IR enabled components when in RF mode. Its built-in translation circuitry converts the RF output from the remote to a rear-panel IR output, which can be connected to an IR blaster or connecting block for complete system control. Control is also available through a rear panel RS-232 port. A12-volt trigger is also provided for control of external components.
Fully enabled for whole-house audio/video, the R-972 supports 3-Zone operation with independent preamp level audio and video available for Zone 2 and audio only available in Zone 3. Its 4-gang FM tuner and XM Radio connectivity provide excellent broadcast quality, and a front panel USB input is available for use with appropriate devices.
Sherwood NEWCASTLE R-774 A/V Receiver
The latest in the Newcastle lineup of high-performance audio/video products, the R-774 provides the audio-video enthusiast with the latest connectivity options and the most
advanced audio and video processing technology. Lossless Dolby TruHD and DTS-HD decoding feeds 7.1 channels of 192 kHz/24 bit D to A converters for superb audio performance. Anchor Bay Technologies’ most advanced ABT2010 video processing chip delivers flawless video, converting any video signal to HDMI, with scaling up to 1080p resolution. Seven totally discrete amplifiers deliver 100 watts RMS each at less than 0.2% THD.
Its three HDMI 1.3 inputs have repeater circuitry, allowing the receiver to receive the HDMI audio from the source component, eliminating the need for separate audio cables from the source component to the receiver. To feed the display, one HDMI output is provided. For legacy video, component video inputs and one output are provided, along with three inputs and two outputs for composite and S-video. Digital audio connections for sources without HDMI include two coaxial and two optical digital inputs and one optical digital output. For discrete multichannel sources, a 7.1 channel direct input can be used, and there are eight analog stereo inputs.
An optional Sherwood BT-R7 Bluetooth receiver, which docks on the front panel, enables the R-774 to receive streaming audio from any Bluetooth A2DP source device, including smart phones, MP3 players, PDAs and PCs.
In addition to Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD Master Audio decoding, the R-774’s capabilities include DTS 96/24, ES, and Neo6; Dolby Pro Logic IIx, as well as SACD and DVD-A. For playback, eight DSP surround modes are available.
Setup and room tuning are easily accomplished through Sherwood’s automated setup and SNAP™ room equalization system. The user need only set up the supplied microphone, and the receiver will set channel levels, speaker distances and individual channel equalization. For bright soundtracks and other sources, Sherwood’s Cinema EQ introduces a gentle high frequency rolloff.
DualZone™ multiple source playback is available for remote listening in a second room. The receiver’s Quartz PLL Synthesized AM/FM tuner makes 30 presets available, and for satellite radio, the receiver is Sirius ready.
Control of the receiver is accomplished through its Dual-Mode™ RF and IR preprogrammed remote control, or through RS-232 control. A 12-volt trigger output is provided for control of other components and for remote operability with Sherwood’s DS-10 iPod doc, the R-774 is compatible with Sherwood’s DigiLink-i system.
