Say It Ain’t So: NFL Re-Ups with DirecTV
This football fan is dreaming of the day when out-of-market games are available without a satellite dish.

The NFL has extended its contract with DirecTV. Sigh.

Through 2014 (at a cost of about $1 billion per year), the satellite provider retains the rights to broadcast Sunday Ticket.

For those not in the know, Sunday Ticket is the wife’s worst nightmare. The package allows you to watch every NFL game on Sundays, not just the ones broadcast on local channels. It’s heaven for fans not living in the same TV market of their team (think Steelers fan in New Hampshire).

I currently live in a townhouse and that means satellite dishes are banned from my world. But even when I was living in my own home without the restrictions of neighborhood covenants, I was afraid to pull the trigger on DirecTV. I’ve heard too many horror stories of interrupted service due to inclement weather - something we get plenty in my neck of the woods.

However, there is a glimmer of hope in this new deal:

The agreement with the El Segundo, Calif., company allows the NFL for the first time to pursue deals with cable operators and Internet providers to offer subscribers the Red Zone Channel, which provides cut-ins to the crucial moments of NFL games. In addition, cable subscribers living in areas where satellite service isn’t available will be able to buy the full Sunday Ticket package over the Internet.

There needs to be some clarity regarding the “where satellite service isn’t available” part of the contract. Does that apply to my situation? If so, sign me up.
