The battle for the thinnest TV at CES 2009 is officially on.

Less than one week after LG announced plans to unveil its 0.976-inch thick LH95 at CES 2009, Samsung says it’s prepping a flat-panel TV between 0.256- to 0.276-inches thick (6.5mm to 7mm), PC World reports.

The Samsung TV would be the thinnest LCD TV ever demoed. The previous record, according to PC World, was a Philips 8mm prototype LCD that was unveiled at the IFA Electronics show in Berlin last year.

Sony also unveiled a 9.9mm flat-panel at IFA, which is on sale and the thinnest LCD in retail stores.

Samsung hasn’t released any specs on the flat panel, only saying it has an LED backlight.
