The format war has left its share of casualties. Before anyone else gets hurt, Samsung has decided to pull the plug on its heavily hyped BD-UP5500 combo player.
It’s not much of a surprise, considering the recent HD DVD developments (of lack of). However, it might be sad for those hoping to keep the defunct format’s dream alive a little longer.
Even while killing the product, Samsung touted its awesomeness (via Crave), stating that the BD-YP5500 “remains a practical solution.” However, “the window of opportunity is smaller than it was before.”
The BD-UP5500 was first announced at January’s Consumer Electronics Show. Samsung is still planning to release the BD-P1500 Blu-ray player this spring.
