Samsung Develops 240Hz Blue Phase LCD
The company is unleashing a new category, boasting an unprecedented image-driving speed.
Samsung Blue Phase

Samsung’s first Blue Phase product will make its debut at L.A.’s SID 2008 International Symposium later this month.

Samsung is riding the Blu wave—and adding an “e” on the end.

The company has developed a new LCD technology called Blue Phase. Samsung says it will double image quality to a whopping 240Hz driving speed, making it more life-like.

“Our blue phase mode is a major evolutionary development beyond conventional liquid crystal modes,” says Samsung executive VP Souk Jun-hyung. “Samsung’s development of this technology provides a tremendous opportunity to move image quality of LCD screens much closer to that of a real moving image.”

The design is also supposed to make the unit very cost-efficient, because it doesn’t need crystal alignment layers like other LCDs. However, the company hasn’t made any announcements about how much green it will take to go Blue. Speaking of cost-efficient: Right now, the company only has plans to show off a 15-inch unit (photo courtesy of Tech Radar), later this month in L.A.

Also, in case you were wondering, the name Blue Phase actually has nothing to do with another colorful, cool technology. The name comes from the bluish hues that developers found watching the new liquid crystal mode in operation.

Don’t expect a Blue Christmas this year—or next. Mass production of Blue Phase units won’t begin until 2011.

Considering how broken and useless Samsung’s 120hz technology is on their LCD’s, why am I not excited?
