A security system does not need to be an elaborate and expensive setup. Samsung Techwin America just announced the Wi-Fi IP SmartCam, designed to deliver real-time monitoring for just $149.

The Wi-Fi in the product name should tell you that this camera can connect to any home network, making it easy to place in any room in the house. Once you find the perfect spot, you can tap into images remotely through a web-enabled computer, smartphone or other mobile device.

Want to check on the baby? The puppy? It’s easy to place the SmartCam in one or more rooms. No manual configuration or software is needed; just push a button. From there, create an account on the website to register your camera and view real-time footage.

According to Samsung, the camera can deliver high-resolution video recording (640x480 / 30fps / H.264) and can even record events in the dark through the use of non-visible infrared LEDs (up to 15 feet). It also has an embedded microphone and speakers, for two-way talk and video recording alarms for when motion or sound is detected.

“Up until now, home security and surveillance solutions have been intimidating, especially for the average homeowner,” said Mike Palazzolo, VP of sales and marketing for Samsung’s consumer video monitoring and security products. “With our new IP SmartCam, we’ve taken simplicity to a whole new level and are offering consumers a hassle-free way to remotely keep an eye on their home, from anywhere in the world, all without having to be tech-savvy.”

Samsung says that the number of cameras per account is unlimited. There will also be Android and iOS apps available to users very soon.

Samsung’s SmartCam will start selling in March 2012, with an MRSP of $149.
