Sacrifices for High-Def Football?
What would you be willing give up to watch football on a high-def TV?

One of the best ways to experience the advantages of HDTV viewing is by watching sporting event. The super-sharp imagery brings a speeding hockey puck into focus, the far corners of the field closer, and the instant replays easier to judge. The benefits, for some, are simply too hard to resist, so much so that they’ll do just about anything—and I mean anything—to watch the big-game on an high-def set. Heck, they’ll even go to the in-laws.

According to a survey from Kelton Research, 43 percent of football fans said they would be more likely to visit their in-laws if they had an HDTV to watch the game. They’d also be willing to give up a good hoagie and beer.

Eighty-one percent said that quality of the TV picture is more important than the food served during a game. Even more surprising, 51 percent of football fans would rather dip into their savings slightly to buy a new HDTV than they would to afford a one-week vacation.

The survey, Pigskin Power, also shows that of all sports fans, pigskin followers are the most enamored by HD. Fifty-four percent of all football fans would purchase a new HDTV for the start of football season if they’re budget allowed, compared to 9 percent for baseball fans and 7 percent for basketball fans.

A few other interesting tidbits revealed by the survey:

  • 61 percent said that HDTV is necessary for a successful football party, more so than surround-sound or alcohol.
  • 62 percent think that watching football in high-def allows them to make better calls than the referees.
