Remember when you’d take the little portable TV player and bring it out onto the deck so you could watch TV outside? And you needed to make sure it was completely under the umbrella on your patio set or you wouldn’t be able to see anything on the screen?

OK, maybe that was 20 years ago and of course TV technology has advanced to the point where TV in the outdoors is becoming more common. But leave it up to the folks at Runco and new parent Planar to develop a high-performance, weatherproof LCD (model WP-42HD) designed specifically for outdoor viewing, with the premium price tag of $8,995.

Generally we don’t need to say much more than the word Runco to let you know of the TV’s quality, and this 42-incher should be no different.

The WP-42HD surpasses International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) Ingress Protection IP56 weatherproof standards, so you can “install it and leave it” outdoors without worry, the company says, and it also features Runco’s own Vivix video processing to deliver the company’s usual quality HD pictures, up to 1080i in this case with native 1366 x 768 resolution.

The weatherproof enclosure allows you not to have to worry about moisture, temperature, dust, oils and whatever else might come the LCD’s way. Its aluminum cabinet is sealed to keep from harm’s way, and even has a special ventilation system so it doesn’t overheat.
