When a house is blessed with some of the best views of La Jolla, Calif., having a comfortable, convenient outdoor vantage point is a must. Already outfitted with a large hot tub, lighting and comfortable seating, the roof of this 6,500-square-foot home was a prime candidate for the addition of an entertainment system. Although the setup that was installed is fairly basic—a 46-inch TV and two outdoor loudspeakers—it serves the small, intimate space well, says custom electronics (CE) professional Shawn Worst of Evolution Home Theatre, San Diego.
A 46-inch SunBriteTV screen provides the video and two SpeakerCraft MT Series speakers bring in the audio. Both parts of the entertainment equation are difficult to discern, the TV having been tucked into a custom-built mahogany cabinet, and the speakers built into the stucco wall that lines the perimeter of the rooftop area. Evolution Home Theatre mounted the TV to a motorized lift, so that on command from a handheld Control4 remote the TV rises into view. The lift can be swiveled manually, and the TV is manufactured to handle glare from the sun.
The homeowner uses the same Control 4 remote to access content from components stored in an equipment rack inside the house. Available are three high-def DVRs, two Vidabox media servers and a Blu-ray Disc player. If the owner only wants to listen to music, he can access tunes from two iPod docks, high-def cable boxes and Internet radio stations.
While on the rooftop the owner can also tap into the Control4 automation system that governs the home’s security system, heating and cooling system, lighting and surveillance cameras. A menu of commands can be viewed on the outdoor TV—the owner just scrolls to the appropriate icon to initiate control; of example, turning on certain lights inside the house when he’s ready to leave the view from his unique rooftop entertainment area.
