Roku’s Netflix Player has added Amazon

Roku has made official what it told us about back in January: it has added the support for streaming videos from Amazon’s Video On Demand service.

While it’s not a subscription-based plan that gives you unlimited movies to watch like the Netflix access that the Roku Player started with, Amazon’s service lets you rent or buy movies and TV shows.

The selection is almost quadruple that of Netflix’s “Watch Instantly” selection, as you get more than 40,000 choices from Amazon, including day-of DVD releases, and day-after TV episode airings.

So now you can indulge in all the catalog titles you want with Netflix, and supplement your movie fix with an easy rental or purchase for the latest blockbusters or buzz titles as they’re released.

No worrying about filling a hard drive with movie purchases either, as your Amazon collection is kept and maintained in the online retail giant’s own space, with your personal download library.

Roku says over the next week current customers will get a free and automatic software update to access Amazon.
