Roku Could Be Streaming HD Netflix By End of 2008
Info about high-def plans for the player have popped up on Roku's message boards.
Roku Netflix Player
Roku is expected to formally announced HD Netflix streaming before the end of the year.
November 03, 2008 | by Rachel Cericola

Everyone is starting to stream Netflix, but the real rage is being able to do the deed in high-def. TiVo, Samsung and Microsoft have all announced plans to have their respective machines provide HD content, now Roku could be following suit.

Roku’s Netflix Player was the first to announce its streaming capabilities. Now it looks like they will be the last one to come to the HD party. They didn’t have a parade or even a press release. Instead, RokuTim (who Hacking NetFlix says could be Tim Twerdahl, Roku’s VP of consumer products) announced on the Roku Forums that, “Roku will be delivering Netflix in HD by the end of the year.”

The post goes on to state that the company plans to use “advanced Profile encodes, which will deliver HD at substantially lower bit-rates than what Xbox is offering.” Not exactly a formal announcement, but it’s keeping interest in the Netflix Player alive for now.

Do you own the Roku box? Will HD boost your interest in the $99 box? Sound off in the comments section below.

I don’t have a 1080P TV so no need for a $300 Blu-Ray player capable of streaming Netflix; but I’ll definitely pick up a $99 Roku for now.
