April 06, 2009 by Arlen Schweiger
April is full of big days to mark on the calendar, especially if you’re a sports fan. If you’re a music fan, and audiophile, be sure to circle April 18 this year as well.
That’s when Record Store Day makes its appearance, and you can count on it the third Saturday in April—last year’s successful nation-wide event included special vinyl releases by Metallica—to be celebrated at a shop near you.
Thankfully, my local independent record store Newbury Comics (a New England-based chain) reminded me of this year’s event in its weekly e-newsletter.
I’ll be heading out there to check out what artists are making in-store appearances and what LP specials and other deals are on tap for the day—last year there was plenty of limited edition, exclusive and free stuff to be had.
And judging from the Record Store Day website, you’ll be able to catch any of hundreds of artists making appearances, like Chris Cornell, the Del McCoury Band, Pat McGee Band, Anthrax’s Scott Ian and a slew of others across the country.
Plus you’ll be able to add to your music collection, hopefully with some new 180-gram vinyl to spin when you get home. Check out the Record Store Day website for a list of participants.
