Q. I need to wirelessly connect two receivers in my home. My goal is to transmit 5.1 channels from the primary receiver (Pioneer Elite SC-05) to the secondary (Harman Kardon) in a different part of the house. Is there anything that can transmit and receive digital 5.1 channels, where the transmitter accepts a digital optical input and the receiver outputs the same? If not digital, how about something that can transmit and receive analog 5.1 channels? - Wick, Los Angeles

A. I’ve spent some time trying to find a solution to your problem with little success. I can’t find anything that will wirelessly transmit the digital signal from one part of the house to another. The only thing I can think of is trying a wireless video transmitter and feed it a coaxial digital signal. This might work on the basis that you can use a composite video switch to switch digital audio. Can’t say I’ve tried it but it might be worth an experiment.

One solution you do have available is to purchase three wireless audio transmitters that can accept an analogue audio signal. Use one for the left/right, one for the surround pair and one for the center/subwoofer. Make sure that each of these can be set to different frequencies so they don’t interfere with one another.  Not the most glamorous or compact solution, but it will work.

Check out the Airfonix products. They have a number of products for sending audio wirelessly. I got excited about their AFX-19D5001 which does have digital inputs and a built in Dolby decoder.
