So much for Microsoft’s exclusive partnership with Netflix.

Sony is bringing Netflix streaming to the PlayStation 3 as early as November. For $8.99 a month, Netflix members will be able to instantly watch an unlimited number of movies and TV episodes directly on their PS3.

Netflix has been available on the Xbox 360 for a while, but you need to subscribe to Xbox Live, which is an extra $50 per year. Give the edge to Sony here.

However, there will be some quirks to streaming Netflix on the PS3. Users will have to insert an “instant streaming Blu-ray disc” into the PS3 every time they want to use Netflix. The disc, which will be provided to you, activates the Netflix service via BD-Live.

Sony says the disc will “initially” be needed to stream Netflix, so hopefully a future software upgrade will make Netflix a built-in feature on the PS3.

You will be able to pick out movies and manage your queue using an onscreen interface. The PS3’s wireless controller will give users full control of the Netflix streaming.

If you’re a Netflix member and own a PS3, click here to reserve a free instant streaming disc.

The $8.99 a month is paid to netflix not Sony.  I’d you already have a netflix account there is no additional fee, thus the reason the Sony deal is better than paying $50 a year for xbix live.

@ deewan

Wow, I did not realize that there was a player available that allowed you to stream Netflix without a subscription. What is the model#, I will go pick one up today and cancel my Netflix account.

$8.99 a month?  I can stream Netflix to my Samsung Blu-Ray player for free.  Also, the titles I can stream to my player are limited.  None of the big time movies are available (yet?)  NOT WORTH IT with a limited number of movie titles.
