The PS3 update adds in XMB, which allows gamers to change settings or send text messages during play.
PlayStation 3 gamers should be giddy today. Sony has released its latest firmware update—2.40.
Available on the PlayStation Network, Gizmodo says that the new update adds the Trophy system, in-game XMB support, and a Google Search Bar to your daily PS3 use.
XMB (also known as XrossMediaBar) allows gamers to change settings and send messages to friends, without having to leave the playing field.
The Trophy addition is a very Xbox-like points/awards system, which may or may not make you feel a little better about those hours of gaming. Unfortunately, this bonus only works on a certain crop of games—for now. Those titles include: BUZZ! Quiz TV, LittleBigPlanet, MotorStorm Pacific Rift, NBA 09, PAIN, PixelJunk Eden, Resistance 2, SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation, and Warhawk.
PC World has a detailed description of each of the new features—or you could just get downloading and let us know what you think in the comments section below.
