Despite the DS getting 3D goodies very soon, Nintendo has no plans to make have the Wii do 3D.
According to Crunch Gear, Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto doesn’t think the console will follow in the portable’s footsteps (or rival Sony’s PlayStation 3, though with that console’s Blu-ray capability 3D firmware upgrading was a no-brainer). When asked about the 3D, he said:
“I do not think the next step will be ours. Wii is indeed one reason so successful, because many people do not have HDTV equipment and [don’t need to] to appreciate what the Wii offers. The Nintendo 3DS is possible because it is a portable console and 3D glasses to work without it. For the living room would need a 3D TV and it will take some time before enough households have 3D TVs that the theme for the Gaming significantly falls.”
I get that 3D is not in that many homes. However, according to Leichtman Research Group (via Dealerscope), 46 percent U.S. homes now have an HDTV. Isn’t that enough? C’mon and give it up fellas!
