Is ‘Wall-E’ the best Blu-ray release of 2008?

High-Def Digest has released its list of 'The Best Blu-rays of 2008' with plenty of eye candy and ear candy among the titles -- so what were your faves this year?

Though we’ve offered up a list of future Blu-rays we’d love to see released, we haven’t put forth recommendations on what you might like to buy now.

So we’ve turned to the movie experts over at High-Def Digest, who have pretty much watched and re-watched every Blu-ray disc that’s available. Today they unveiled their picks for the top Blu-rays of 2008, in diplomatic alphabetical order (drum roll, please):

  • Band of Brothers (HBO Home Video, 1.78:1 aspect ratio)
  • Baraka (MPI Home Video, 2.20:1)
  • The Dark Knight (Warner Home Video, 2.40:1 and 1.78:1)
  • The Godfather Collection (Paramount Home Entertainment, 1.85:1)
  • Iron Man (Paramount, 2.40:1)
  • The Nightmare Before Christmas (Walt Disney Studios, 1.66:1)
  • No Country for Old Men (Walt Disney, 2.35:1)
  • The Sand Pebbles (Fox Home Entertainment, 2.35:1)
  • Sleeping Beauty (Walt Disney, 2.55:1)
  • Wall-E (Walt Disney, 2.39:1)

Not too shabby a list—with some titles that might have slipped through the cracks even for Blu-ray collectors in Baraka and The Sand Pebbles.

If one had to be named as the top release of the year, just based on the overall scores it looks like Wall-E would take the prize, as the only one with a perfect 5 out of 5 stars from High-Def Digest (a handful on the list received 4.5 out of 5 overall).

Agree, disagree? From your purchases or rentals, which Blu-ray titles encapsulated the high-def experience the most this year, and looked and sounded the best in your home theaters? Let us know in comments below!
