Velodyne Starts Selling Direct to Consumers


The subwoofer company is kicking off its new business model with free shipping for all online orders.

You no longer have to call a dealer/installer to add a Velodyne subwoofer into your setup. The manufacturer just announced plans (via to start selling direct to the consumer.

“After careful evaluation of how we get our products to our customers, we determined that we can be more effective in serving the stereo enthusiast by offering products directly from Velodyne,” says company CEO David Hall.

Part of the move means that Velodyne had to let go its network of manufacturer reps. The reps were notified on July 25, about the same time that the company’s new website went live.

“Our decisions are not made lightly and we are making every effort to balance business priorities with the respectful treatment of our representatives who have made numerous contributions to Velodyne over the years,” Hall said in a letter to the reps. “Due to our new road map and after much consideration, we are terminating our relationship with all of our representatives.”

The entire Velodyne line is now available on the web, including the recently reviewed DD-15+. According to the new site, the company is offering free shipping for all online orders. However, don’t think by buying online you’re getting a special deal. Apparently, Velodyne is selling products online for the same price they sell in stores, where you may be able to get a little advice and even help carrying that new purchase to the car.
