John and Kirstin Coppola wanted to finish their basement. After taking a tour of The Home Theater Group’s dedicated theaters, the couple decided to do more of a multipurpose room.
The goal was to put together a place where the couple could socialize, watch movies and entertain. Considering the basement was a large space and currently unfinished, we had an open pallet to work with. There was one problem: The basement was dotted with supporting columns that could not be moved. The columns created aesthetic and logistic issues.
After reviewing the design issues, the installation firm developed a proposal. The space in mind had three distinct areas that, while functional, seamlessly blended together to create a visually aesthetic and beautiful multipurpose room. There was a theater, a bar area and a card table area.
The design team raised the ceiling in front of a main support beam in the theater to hide the projector. A column was incorporated into the bar to visually anchor the ending of the bar and the beginning of the theater.
Another request was that the theater screen could be seen from the bar without any obstacles. To accomplish this, the bar was angled not to impede the line of site from the seating to the theater screen. What made the area more difficult was the location of the card table area. The client wanted the area incorporated into the room, yet still give some separation from the theater. The area needed to be functional and beautiful, while balancing with the overall installation. We added a local TV to the card area for viewing, providing the ability to watch something different other than what was playing on the theater screen.
The main equipment was incorporated into a Middle Atlantic Rack that was custom installed under the bar for easy access along with the Lutron Grafik Eye Control System. Control of the lighting was essential to accent the theater and other areas of the basement creating a clean, warm and inviting space.
