Top 10 Blu-ray Releases for June 15

Cultish hits like Flash Gordon and Showgirls get the high-def treatment this week.

I’m sure it’s one of those things where my memory of liking something is actually better than the real thing. I can remember loving Flash Gordon as a kid, between all of the action, the urgency of saving the world, and the rockin’ Queen soundtrack.

Thirty years later the movie is out on high-def Blu-ray disc this week, and my first instinct is that it’s probably quite dated looking. My second instinct is that the soundtrack might rock even harder in DTS-HD Master Audio lossless format, and that it would look pretty cool in a CinemaScope projection theater setup with its 2.35:1 original aspect ratio.

I can’t say that the story, or the set design for that matter, won’t seem incredibly corny after all this time, but for nostalgia purposes Flash Gordon is probably worth a re-viewing. (Click here to view a slideshow of our Top 10 Blu-ray Releases for this week.)

Another movie that perhaps gets a cultish following not for how good it is, but for how ridiculously bad it is happens to be out on Blu-ray this week as well, Showgirls. Also for nostalgia sake, the obvious attraction was the combination of a Las Vegas over-the-top show with a Saved By the Bell alum—Elizabeth Berkley—in a very revealing role, so to speak. We’re guessing parts of this movie look quite good in 1080p.

If it’s more of a sophisticated movie you’re after, however, you can ditch Flash Gordon and Showgirls and check out Mystery Train from director Jim Jarmusch. It’s a Criterion Collection release, so you know you can count on a stellar transfer.

Also this week, don’t miss Lost’s John Locke—Terry O’Quinn, one of the few actors on the show who brought previous movie experience—in the late 80s’ The Stepfather.
