Sony Unveils Wi-Fi Blu-ray Player, Networked BRAVIA TVs
Sony’s BDP-S560 Blu-ray Player (top), BRAVIA W-Series LCD (middle), and BDV-E300 BD theater system
Adds BD-Live capable Blu-ray players, home theater systems, and BRAVIA LCDs.
Sony wasn’t done introducing products at CES 2009. It just added two Blu-ray disc players, including one with Wi-Fi capability for BD-Live access, among several other products at its line show in Las Vegas.
The two stand-alone players (BDP-S360, BDP-S560) are joined by new BRAVIA Internet-video-ready LCD TVs and BD theater systems with S-AIR wireless audio.
The BDP-S360 and BDP-S560 deliver full HD 1080/60p and 24p True Cinema output, decode the latest advanced audio codecs and are BD-Live capable with a broadband Internet connection and purchase of external memory.
The BDP-S560’s built-in wireless network capabilities (802.11N/G/B/A) reflect Sony’s focus on making its Blu-ray players more interactive — a trend which was largely introduced at last year’s line show.
The BDP-S560 can connect to the Internet through your existing wireless network to download and stream BD-Live content, which Sony says includes:
- Additional scenes
- Short subjects
- Interactive games
The connectivity also facilitates firmware updates.
Sony says the BDP-S560 is Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) ready, allowing it to connect to other DLNA compliant devices to share digital photos.
Both models offer an external port for local storage so users can add their USB flash storage device. The BDP-S560 features a front USB port for viewing photos from a USB flash memory device or directly from a digital camera.
The BDP-S360 (approx.$300) and BDP-S560 (approx. $350) are scheduled to ship in the summer of 2009.
Home Theater Systems
The 5.1 channel BDV-E300 and BDV-E500W Blu-ray Disc home theater systems are both BD-Live capable.
The BDV-E500W features integrated S-AIR wireless audio capabilities. The BDV-E300 model is S-AIR ready so users can add optional modules.
Both systems include:
- Sony’s Digital Media Port for added control and connectivity for music playback
- A cradle for iPod players
- An optional Network Walkman cradle
- A Bluetooth adapter
The BDV-E300 ($600) and BDV-E500W ($800) are slated to ship in June.
BRAVIA W-Series TVs
The BRAVIA W-series LCD TVs (1080p) add an economic HDTV option, while delivering the same interactive functionality as the recently announced BRAVIA Z5100 and XBR9 models.
The 52-inch KDL-52W5100, 46-inch KDL-46W5100 and 40-inch KDL-40W5100 feature an Ethernet connection for accessing BRAVIA Internet Video content and BRAVIA Internet Widgets using an existing broadband connection.
The W-Series models are Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) compliant. All three models are slated to be available in spring 2009.
