The biggest complaint about 4K Ultra HD TV seems to be that there’s no real native content out there. Sony is working on fixing that. The company has just started taking pre-orders for its 4K Ultra HD Media Player, with plans to ship the product on July 15, 2013.

Sony’s box, which also goes by the name FMP-X1, was first introduced months back. The box is exclusive to Sony, meaning you’ll need one of the company’s 4K TVs to use it.

It will come pre-loaded with 10 movies, all of which are presented in true 4K. Those titles include The Amazing Spider-Man, Bad Teacher, 2010’s The Karate Kid, The Other Guys, Battle: Los Angeles, That’s My Boy, Salt, 2012’s Total Recall, Taxi Driver, and The Bridge on the River Kwai.

Another nice perk is that this box will also provide access to Sony’s newly announced Video Unlimited 4K service, once it launches this fall. The streaming service will offer feature films, TV shows and other programming, all in 4K. The player has a 2TB hard drive to store rentals and purchases, which will start around $7.99 and $29.99, respectively.

Sony’s FMP-X1 4K Ultra HD Video Player is now available for pre-order, with an MSRP of $699. If you previously purchased one of Sony’s X900A 4K Ultra HD TVs, the company will be offering a $200 introductory discount. A few X900A TVs may also qualify for in-home premium service activation for Video Unlimited 4K. Check Sony’s activation website for more information and to see if your set qualifies.
