Sharp is underscoring its sponsorship of Major League Baseball this summer with a national sweepstakes that runs from July 8 through the World Series, company executives told journalists at a roundtable held in New York in early June.

Consumers can enter the sweepstakes at all retail locations where Aquos TVs are sold. Prizes include a trip to the 2007 World Series and the chance to meet Hall of Famer Hank Aaron, a trip to 2008 spring training for your team of choice, an Aquos TV, and MLB.com gift cards. Meanwhile, the company’s Earth Day promotion—which offered customers who bought a new Sharp TV the option of recycling their old one for free—didn’t yield the results the company had hoped for. “Consumers’ interest in recycling hasn’t translated to action,” according to Bob Scaglione, senior VP and group manager. The company noted, however, that the 64 collection events it held in 2005 produced 750,000 pounds of recycled TV products.

The company is touting green in its TV design. Tony Favia, senior product manager, told journalists that no lead, cadmium, or hexavalent chrome are used in the production of Sharp TVs, and when the company switches to LED backlights in the future, mercury will be eliminated from the manufacturing process as well. “Twenty years from now,” Favia said, “consumers will only have to replace the backlight of their TVs because that’s the only part that degrades.”
