RealNetworks Banned from Selling RealDVD

Six major movie studios have questioned the legalities of RealDVD, a software programs which allows you to rip your DVD collection right to any PC.

A judge has barred the company from selling its DVD-copying software -- at least for now.

Well that was certainly quick. Less than a week ago, RealNetworks announced its RealDVD DVD-ripping software. About 24 hours later, they received news that six movie studios were suing to stop those software sales.

The studios have won, it seems—at least temporarily. According to Electronista, a judge has put a temporary ban on sales of RealDVD, until they can figure things out. Apparently, that will take at least until Tuesday, when the temporary ban may be lifted or made permanent, depending on what the judge decides.

Although it’s a setback, Real does have one small victory under its belt: They did have the case moved from a Central District court to a Northern District of California court. They wanted to move away from where the studios operate, in order to receive a fair trial.
