Philips Celebrates Ambilight Anniversary with 1080p, LEDs and Larger Screens
Philips’ three new Ambilight models will feature 1080p resolution
Philips' new LCD models will be available in 42-, 47- and 52-inch sizes, ranging from $2,999 to $3,599.
Philips is celebrating the 10-year anniversary of its Ambilight LCD TVs with an upgrade to 1080p resolution, an energy-efficient LED backlight and larger screen sizes.
At a sneak preview in New York last week, Philips showed its Perfect Pixel HD engine that’s designed to match incoming pixels of the signal to those of the 1080p display for optimum sharpness, color and overall accuracy. The new 42-, 47- and 52-inch Ambilight sets have gotten a bump in refresh rate to 120 Hz for better motion reproduction.
New products due out this summer include the Ambilight Full Surround 42-inch 42PFL9832D LCD TV ($2,999), the 47-inch Ambilight 2-Channel 47PFL9732D ($2,799) and the 52-inch 2-Channel 52PFL7432D ($3,599).
Philips also showed the first Ambisound product, a single bar designed to replicate a surround-sound experience from an enclosure that rests beneath a flat-panel TV. A DVD player is integrated into the speaker bar, which uses array processing and driver positioning, along with psychoacoustics, to simulate a five-speaker surround-sound system. A matching subwoofer is included. Price for the HTS8100, which is due out this summer, is $799. A two-channel version will retail for $599.
