New Universal Blu-ray Discs to Include iPhone, iPod touch Features
Universal Studios says iPhone and iPod touch users can get some cool extra features on upcoming Blu-ray releases, including an upcoming 2-disc “Fast & Furious” special edition.
Starting with 'Fast & Furious' release, users can also automatically update Twitter and Facebook as part of the BD-Live functionality.
Universal Studios — you may remember them from the HD DVD camp during the format war — has announced some innovative Blu-ray disc features that complement the iPhone or iPod touch.
The studio announced that some of its upcoming Blu-ray disc releases will include an extensive array of iPhone and iPod touch-enabled features that can be accessed via companion applications from Apple’s App store.
The official launch on the Apple App store will take place July 28, 2009, and coincide with Universal’s 2-disc special edition Blu-ray release of “Fast & Furious” with BD-Live.
From Universal’s announcement:
iPhone and iPod touch users will have the ability to control interactive content on their Internet and Wi-Fi connected Blu-ray players for a more enhanced and unique experience. Later this year on select Universal releases, consumers will also be able to access bonus content found on their Blu-ray disc and download it into their iPhone or iPod touch to watch features on-the-go; use the devices as a virtual remote to control their Blu-ray disc features; and/or access additional detailed information about the film, its cast and more while watching the movie.
Releases will also integrate with social network applications or sites such as Facebook and Twitter to allow users to update their friends about movie-related activities.
Among the interactive BD-Live features on the upcoming “Fast & Furious” release is one tied to the “Virtual Car Garage” bonus feature. Blu-ray viewers can use their iPhone or iPod touch to control 360-degree views of the street-racers and call up specs on the film’s cars. Universal says that’s just one of many features on the new release, adding that it’s packed “with more fast cars, hot bodies and breath-taking stunts.”
The 2-Disc Special Edition Blu-ray “Fast & Furious” will have a suggested retail price of $39.98 .
The app will be available for free from Apple’s App Store.
