Netflix Gets Social via Facebook Integration


Users can soon check out what friends are watching and share favorite selections.

Netflix is always making crazy recommendations for my “viewing pleasure.” Instead of having the subscription service make suggestions based on one of your viewing whims, now it’s asking your friends to become part of the selection process.

Netflix is finally making Facebook integration an option for U.S. subscribers. Linking the two accounts basically means that users can now see what friends have watched, via “Friends’ Favorites” and “Watched by Your Friends” rows on Netflix’s main menu.

Members can also opt to share that info just within Netflix or blast it out for the world to see—or at least the world of Facebook. As long as your friends are connected as well, you should be able to check out and share selections on any device that streams Netflix.

“There are few better ways to find a movie or TV series you’ll love than hearing about it from your friends,” said Tom Willerer, vice president of product innovation at Netflix.  “Facebook already makes it easy for our international members to connect with friends over TV shows and movies and we’re thrilled to now bring this experience to our U.S. members.”

Netflix has been offering Facebook intergration to international subscribers for about a year now. U.S. subscribers should have access to the social features by the end of this week. The company is hoping to use the capabilities to add more features in the future.

“People naturally talk about TV shows and movies and love to share their experiences,” said Willerer. “Through the Netflix/Facebook integration we want to let Netflix members express themselves on Facebook and provide a digital version of the proverbial water cooler.”
