Master Suite Bubbles Over with A/V
SILVER WINNER: Best Master Suite
TVs, surround-sound, colored LED lighting and touchpanels are found in both bedroom and bath.
The design is ultraclean, the technology is carefully hidden—and the combination makes this master suite a masterpiece. Anchored by a contemporary custom cabinet that houses a see-through fireplace between the bedroom and bath, the space packs in video for each room, surround-sound audio, colored LED lighting, touchpanels and keypads, and a TV on a motorized lift. And how many master suites have two zones of audio for the bathroom alone?
Let’s start there, where the owner can listen to TV audio or the whole-house music system, whether he’s soaking in the tub or enjoying a shower. The main bathroom audio plays over SpeakerCraft in-ceiling speakers placed in each soffit and above dual-sided vanities, while weatherproof MTX speakers fire from under the shower bench. When there aren’t tunes from FM, AM, XM, HD satellite or a Kaleidescape media server, audio comes from whatever’s playing on the 30-inch Mitsubishi LCD. Don’t see it? Audio Video Interiors in Medina, Ohio, pulled one of its installation tricks so the set stays hidden when not in use, but descends on an Auton lift when powered on. It can even be rotated toward the shower.
“He just wanted to be able to hide it up there,” says AVI’s Jason Spence. “The most challenging part of the whole installation was probably the lift. It was right at a roof peak that sloped down so there was very little height to work with above, especially when it came to managing the video cables.”
Video wasn’t a piece of cake in the bedroom, either, where AVI recessed a 43-inch Runco plasma into a sleek cabinet. An opening was cut for the plasma to fit flush, and Spence attached it to a cantilever mount so the TV could be pulled out for servicing. A series of fans and ducts up to the attic allow ample ventilation for the plasma, as well as the A/V gear that’s stored on two equipment racks below the fireplace. Thermostatic control for the equipment space and behind the plasma handles any ambient heat from the fireplace.
The owner also wanted surround sound, so AVI recessed the center-channel speaker above the plasma and installed the other front and rear channels in a soffit that encircles the room. If the A/V isn’t jazzy enough, a Crestron automation system and touchpanel lets the owner adjust the eight-color LED cove lighting, perfect for such an illuminating space.
