Rarely do we expect or want manufacturers to flatten out sound. However, LG Electronics is making that flat audio truly unique, via the LG SoundPlate.

The newly announced speaker offers a slightly different take on the traditional soundbar. Instead, it’s designed to sit under a flat-panel TV, where it promises to distribute an impressive soundfield.

Also known as the LAP340, this speaker packs a 4.1-channel sound system and dual built-in subwoofers into a package that measures a mere 1.38 inches high. It also boasts 120 watts of output, LG’s Bass Port system, and a Cinema Mode for a more immersive listening experience.

Another noteworthy feature is LG’s Sound Sync, which allows listeners to wirelessly stream content from smartphones, tablets, and other devices, all via built-in Bluetooth technology.

“The tradeoff for the ultra-thin TV design has been smaller speakers, which has led to a surge in demand for supplementary home audio devices,” said Jay Vandenbree, senior vice president of LG’s home entertainment division. “We’re augmenting our already robust line of soundbars with the LG SoundPlate to give consumers yet another alternative for powerful home entertainment sound in a compact, attractive design.”

Designed specifically for TVs ranging from 32 to 55 inches, the LAP340 SoundPlate works as a pedestal for your TV. It can also fit on a shelf or TV stand. LG has yet to announce pricing for the LAP340 SoundPlate, but it should start shipping in the U.S. sometime next month.
