Interior Design for Outdoor Audio
26 Leon speakers custom-designed for 2-acre yard.
Rock speakers have become the go-to audio components for the outdoors. But there was something about them that didn’t resonate with the owner of this spacious outdoor area. “It’s a really open area with minimal landscape coverage to blend in rock speakers, and we didn’t want to mar the stonework around the pool or the exterior of the house with traditional boxy outdoor speakers,” says Kaloma Smith of Home Theater of Long Island (HTOLI), Manhasset, N.Y.
Familiar with the customization skills of Leon Speakers, Smith asked Leon director of marketing Ethan Kaplan to pay a visit to the residence when he happened to be in the area. After analyzing the area and the needs of the homeowner, Kaplan returned to company headquarters to retool its Boundary Series outdoor speakers so that they’d fit perfectly within the moldings along the house and poolhouse. Three different sizes were manufactured and the speaker housings tapered slightly and color-matched to the moldings.
Feeding the speakers is a rack of A/V equipment in dedicated home theater that HTOLI had designed and installed a couple of years ago for the family. “Even then, we knew that the family would eventually put in an outdoor system, so we made sure to run wire for it when we were doing the theater,” says Smith. [The home was a bronze 2012 Electronic House Home of the Year winner.] The house had already been set up with a Savant home control system, so the homeowners can simply use the same mobile app on their iPads to access and control the music from the yard. HTOLI divided the backyard audio into 8 distinct listening zones, so that they can select a specific area to have music. “Unless they are having a big party, they usually won’t activate all the zones,” Smith says.
