Gold Winner:
A Life of Its Own
It’s hard to believe that the only features the owners of this elaborate high-tech home had originally wanted were a safe, secure computer network and modest whole-house audio and video systems. “Their exact words were ‘balanced’ lighting, ‘nice’ music and ‘good’ video,” recalls Scott McAllister, president of MediaWorks NW, the Sacramento, CA, based home systems firm hired to integrate the handful of electronic systems into Thomas and Cathy Van Berkem’s mountain home.

Silver Winner:
Entertainment for All
It may be best to describe this Southern California house by what it doesn’t have. It doesn’t have a Hubble space telescope, for one thing. And we don’t think it has one of those 60-mile particle accelerators—though we can’t be too sure. But this house has just about everything else. n It has a killer home theater with a 110-inch Stewart screen, a high-end Runco DLP projector and great sound from Meridian and M&K amps and Von Schweikert speakers.

Bronze Winner:
Got Game?
How’s this for a game room? Besides the pool table and arcade games, a Vutec screen descends to show a picture from a Sharp DLP projector, while NHT speakers and Marantz electronics provide the necessary surround sound. And there are disco lights. Next to it is a regulation-length bowling lane with an electronic scoring and automatic side rails for the kids.
