Home Gets Technology Overhaul in Time for Wedding
Powerful technology behing the scenes

Some homes need everything, the kitchen sink and then some. This 18,500-square-foot, 33-room house was just such a project. The homeowners wanted the works and they wanted it to work together: whole-house audio/video, HVAC, lighting, pool and spa and security. And all of it had to be done in time for a wedding. New York’s Innerspace Electronics was up to the challenge and delivered an integrated system that was a marriage of technology and lifestyle.
The project was new construction, which can be stressful for any installer to work in because they have to contend with interior designers, builders and contractors who all have different ideas. But it’s also a wonderful blank slate for creating a top-notch whole-house entertainment and control network.
“From start to finish, the project took a couple of years because the house had to be built. The real chunk of the install and programming took about four weeks and we had to get everything complete before the wedding,” says Barry Reiner, President and Co-Founder of InnerSpace Electronics.
The backbone of the system is Crestron-based, including a 22-zone audio control system and an 11-zone video network and a full surround sound zone. From touch pads throughout the house the homeowners can control all of the audio and video, as well 12 thermostats and a Lutron lighting control system. Temperature sensors located throughout the home can also help keep temperatures even throughout the house and be monitored on any touchscreen.
Like many homes with this much integration, the ability to enjoy the technology but not see it, was important to the homeowners, particularly in some rooms. “The conservatory was a challenge insofar as the clients and the architect didn’t want to see the speakers but did want it as an audio zone,” explains Reiner. “We installed the speakers low to the ground, in transoms or anywhere we could keep them out of view.”
Almost no room was left without some form of integration. Even in the gymnasium, Innerspace installed B&W speakers, two TVs and a Lutron lighting system. And the master bathroom, complete with a beautiful fireplace and seating area, featured speakers, a television and control pad.
The client was also very keen on security integration, as well. To that end, Innerspace integrated the 24 cameras installed throughout the house so that they could be viewed on the touchscreens. They also programmed an extra feature that, every time the doorbell rings, automatically shows the front-door camera view on every touch panel. And the home is completely remote accessible, so the clients can operate any part of the system from pretty much anywhere in the world.
And, yes, they finished all in time for the wedding.
