Geodesic Dome Home Rocks with 2.35 Theater
FINALIST: Best Home Theater $50,000-$100,000
This Washington state home theater brings the latest super-widescreen video and high-performance audio to this unconventional residence.
We’ve seen home theaters installed in all sorts of places—attics, garages, spare rooms, basements, family rooms—but for the most part the homes themselves are traditional.
This one in the beautiful Pacific Northwest resides in a home that’s anything but traditional ... it’s a geodesic dome residence that was built years before the theater installation. And we’d say the theater looks right at home in it.
“The current theater consisted of a TV and a variety of components in the basement. Their new vision was a dedicated projection room built on to the existing home, coupled with upgrading electronics to meet current audio and video formats,” explains Dave Hunt of Lynnwood, Wash.-based custom electronics pro Intuitive Integration.
“Beyond that the design was an open slate with one exception: budget. After several meetings and dozens of theater pictures the homeowners began, with our guidance, to sketch several designs. At that point we stepped in and refined each of the elements they loved to bring a true collaborative effort to life.”
Despite dealing with some unorthodox room dimensions and angles, Intuitive Integration was able to faithfully design and build a high-performance theater that would make any traditional dedicated basement room proud. It has all the fixings: 2.35 CineCurve Screen from Stewart Filmscreen, powerful Runco 1080p single-chip projector with a Schneider 2.35 anamorphic motorized lens, 7.1 Surround Sound (utilizing the homeowners’ existing B&W 802D towers, center and surrounds), Sony Blu-ray disc player, Satellite and game sources, touch screen remote control for all systems, hidden media storage, lighting control, accent lighting (with U-Ray LEDs) and full room acoustic treatments.
To help with those room treatments, Intuitive Integration worked with Seattle Home Theater for custom design and on-site installation including custom screen wall, wall and ceiling treatments, custom walls with stretched fabric and equipment and storage rack doors discreetly built in.
“The owners’ taste in art and decor blends perfectly into the design and helps create a whimsical and modern feel,” says Hunt. “The performance rivals audio and video packages far in economic excess. The result? Affordable luxury and two exceedingly happy homeowners!”
