Consumers Want HDTVs and Blu-ray Players
A recent study has consumers looking to make home theater purchases over the next six months.
While iPhones and iPads seem to be all the rage, there really is no substitute for home theater goodies—at least that’s what a recent survey says.
According to ABI Research, consumers want HDTVs and Blu-ray players. The report, titled, “Technology Barometer: Connected Home & Computing,” interviewed 2,024 U.S. consumers.
About 24 percent of respondents are hoping to buy an HDTV over the next six months, with 17 percent making plans for a Blu-ray player. About 60 percent of those surveyed also say they already have one HDTV at home.
“As consumers replace older TVs, there really isn’t much choice now but to buy an HDTV, so even if the consumer doesn’t necessarily want to view HDTV content, that’s usually what they end up with,” says Michael Inouye, senior analyst. “Prices for HDTVs have fallen quite a bit, and many households are now replacing their second- and third-string televisions.”
Despite what many think, tablet computers ranked seventh on the list. Video game consoles came in third, with 16 percent of the group’s attention. However, 46 percent of the total group has no plans to make any major gaming purchases in the next six months.
Naturally, price is the most important factor when planning a purchase. However, gamers said that screen size and controls were actually a bigger concern. When it comes to computers, processor speed, memory, storage capacity, and operating system also outweighed cost factors.
This is just the first part of ABI’s study. “Technology Barometer” surveys respondents biannually in seven countries, including the U.S., China, India, South Korea, France, Germany, and the UK.
