Comcast Delivers Network TV On Demand

Missed an episode of Glee?” If you have Comcast, you can catch it through your On-Demand menu.

Starting today, Comcast says that subscribers will be able to view more than 20 ABC and Fox programs via the provider’s On Demand service. New episodes will be available the day after the live broadcast. However, don’t expect to fast-forward to the good parts; that function has been disabled.

This move will nearly double the amount of hit shows the service provider offers. It also means that Comcast will be the only ones offering on-demand content from all four major networks, which also includes NBC and CBS. They currently offer around 600 different TV series from various networks, as well as movies. Comcast says that subscribers will be able to access the four most recent episodes from their broadcast network lineup.

“What does this mean for our customers? Simply put, they can catch up and keep up on all of their favorite shows. What does this mean for broadcast networks and content partners, and why now? First and foremost, people still love to watch their favorite movies and shows on TV,” said Marcien Jenckes, senior VP and GM of Comcast’s Video Services. “As such, the TV series category On Demand has exploded in viewership—in fact, three years ago it wasn’t even a top-rated category on our platform, and today it is our top-viewed category On Demand…and with our On Demand service generating 350 million views a month, nearly 20 BILLION views since we launched the service, that’s catching Hollywood’s eye.”

Some of the new On Demand programming includes Glee, Grey’s Anatomy, Cougar Town,and The Simpsons. Comcast is upping its game (and VOD offering) in order to compete with the likes of Netflix, DirecTV’s new $30 VOD service, and other streaming services. 

“We should consider this VOD 2.0,” Jenckes added. “Actually, I think we’re closer to VOD 10.0…and there’s much more to come for both consumers and the industry on that front.”
