Can Technology Promote a Better Night’s Sleep?

It may not be a proven scientific fact, but electronic systems can help sleep deprived homeowners fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer. The systems we suggest may be bit more sophisticated than a nightstand noise machine, and may require the handiwork of a qualified custom electronics (CE) professional to install and program, but if sleep eludes you, they’re definitely worth checking out. Here are a few ideas you may want to consider:
Lullaby: Soft, gentle tunes are relaxing and can ease babies and adults alike into slumber. Whole-house music systems can be set up by a CE pro to play a preselected assortment of tunes only on the bedroom loudspeakers, at a preset volume. Over the course of a half hour (or whatever amount of time you want) the music can gradually fade out.
Fading Lights: The bedroom lights can sync with the music, fading from a dim setting to completely off over the course of a predetermined amount of time. The lullaby and fading lights can be programmed to engage at the same time every night, or you can activate the bedtime routine by touching a button on an remote control, an iPad or a button by the side of the bed.
Curtain Calls: If your bedroom has shades or draperies you can attach them to hardware that can open and close them automatically at prescribed times of day, like right before bedtime, blocking out the light and creating the private, cozy environment you need for a good night’s sleep.
Pathway Lights: If you commonly wake up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom or visit the refrigerator, and want to fall back asleep fast, have your CE pro design pathway lighting that will lead you to your destination safely without blinding you on the way. The lights can be triggered by a motion sensor planted underneath the flooring by your bed or by a button that you press on a keypad by your nightstand. They can be set up to brighten to a soft intensity level that’s easy on sleepy eyes then fade out after 10 minutes or so.
Do Not Disturb: Particularly helpful for those with early bedtimes, a do-not-disturb setting can provide the quiet and peaceful environment conducive to a great night’s sleep. In this setting, a home control system (installed and programmed by a CE pro) can temporarily mute the doorbell and the telephone. Of course, you’ll want to let some calls to go through (your kids, parents, etc.), and your CE pro can set up the system to ensure they do.
