Can a $299 Camcorder Projector Hook Budding A/V Geeks?
Hammacher Schlemmer is introducing portable high-def to the masses with its $299.95 Camcorder Projector.
If you have $300 burning a hole in your pocket and fancy yourself a budding A/V enthusiast, Hammacher Schlemmer has a little something to sell you.
The newly announced Camcorder Projector is exactly what it sounds like. There’s no fancy name to confuse you, and no real fancy technology, either. The camcorder promises 720p HD video as well as still pictures on any flat surface, anywhere from five to 65 inches.
Other features include a 5-megapixel CMOS sensor, automatic focus, and 5X digital zoom (no optical soom). The integrated projector part is slightly less impressive, boasting a 12- to 14-lumen lamp and images at 640x480 in a dark room.
The price isn’t too painful, but is it worth it? We could spend hours going through the Hammacher Schlemmer catalog, and even playing with many of their nifty gadgets. However, your $300 could probably be better invested elsewhere.
At last month’s Consumer Electronics Show, Sony introduced three camcorder/projector products: the HDR-PJ50V, HDR-PJ30V and HDR-PJ10. Of course, they are more expensive, but also have a more impressive feature set. Aside from the 3D and a 1080x1920 resolution, the HDR-PJ50V ($1,000) also incorporates a 220GB hard drive, while the HDR-PJ30V ($950) has 32GB of flash memory and the HDR-PJ10 ($700) includes 16GB.
If you can wait, one of those three would probably be a better investment. Sony says that the two flash models will be available sometime next month, with the HDR-PJ50V coming in April.
