One of the toughest items to shop for is technology. With features and prices all over the board, it’s difficult to know whether you’re getting a good deal or not. A new service from Retrevo (www.retrevo.com) will give holiday shoppers the tools they need to find the best deals in town on everything from digital cameras to plasma TVs.

Called RetrevoQ, the online shopping advisor sends text messages and tweets directly to your cellphone with all the information you need to make a smart purchase. All you do is send an SMS text or tweet to the site 41411 with “retrevoq” followed by the product make and model.

Within seconds the site shoots back information about whether or not the gadget is a good buy, if it’s reasonably priced, prices you might find of the product online, and a link to a real-time review of the product.

You can get to the same type of information—plus more—from Retrevo by logging onto the website from your computer at home. And, according to Retrevo, the computer is most people’s preferred place to shop during Black Friday.

The company’s Gadgetology report found that 22 percent prefer to shop for consumer electronics online, while 18 percent are planning to go to the store (see chart below). The main reason for skipping the store? Too much trouble, said 18 percent of respondents.

Still, good deals can be had by braving the crowds. Of those who bought their electronics at the store during last year’s Black Friday rush, 72 percent said they got what they wanted.
