Another OLED Option Expected in Early 2010

LG’s 15-inch OLED prototype made an appearance at CES 2009

LG will reportedly begin shipping its 15-inch OLED TV in Korean markets in December, with global roll-out to follow.

There’s no denying that OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) displays are super cool, in part because they’re super thin.

Unfortunately, they’re also super expensive and super rare on the consumer end still—the lone ranger’s been the XEL-1 that debuted from Sony last January. But that was only an 11-inch screen and cost a whopping $2,500.

Though it might be years before larger versions of these energy-efficient OLED displays hit mass market, at least we can expect a model slightly larger than Sony’s coming soon. LG is reportedly planning on shipping its 15-inch OLED TV beginning in December.

In an interview with OLED-Info.com, LG vice president of OLED sales and marketing Won Kim said that production of the TV will go to Korean markets in December ‘09 to January 2010, with global roll-out thereafter.

That would make it about a two-year stretch between the Sony and LG releases, with a 4-inch increase in screen size. After seeing the LG display at this year’s CES we can surely attest that it look great and the .03-inch depth is fantastic, but let’s hope we don’t have to wait until 2012 for a 19-incher.

Won Kim didn’t reveal any pricing, but we’re not holding our breath that this will be any cheaper than Sony’s XEL-1. Now we just have to play the waiting game.
