VDIO: Is Another Netflix Competitor Coming?
The founders of Skype are hoping you will soon watch VDIO.
The vultures appear to be circling Netflix’s scraps. GigaOM says that VDIO is hoping to be the service to scoop up jaded subscribers.
VDIO is a newly formed company. That said, they have quite the impressive roster of players, including the founders of Skype. Some of the particulars, however, seem to be missing—like how much the service will cost, what kind of content they will have, and when they plan to launch in the U.S.
Currently, the privately funded service is in closed beta, in the UK only.
Pricing and content will be key, considering some of the recent gripes we’ve heard about Netflix. Refresh VDIO’s cryptic home page and you’ll get stills from TV shows such as Mad Men and Breaking Bad, as well as films including The Dark Knight, Enter the Dragon, and The Shining. The company also says that “VDIO lets you instantly watch the best in TV and movies, right now.” Ready to sign up?
That home page also makes us think that an active Facebook account is a requirement to use the service. Upon giving them our info, however, we learned that the service is currently an exclusive for UK audiences.
We’re guessing that the VDIO people know what they are doing. Skype just sold to Microsoft for about $8.5 billion.
