4 Companies Team Up for Universal 3D Glasses
Sony, Samsung, Panasonic and Xpand 3D plan to have the new product out by next year.
Normally any discussion of Sony, Panasonic and Samsung sounds like the consumer electronics equivalent of the NFL’s AFC East division and the competitiveness between the Patriots, Jets and Dolphins.
Unlike the Patriots’ Bill Belichick and the Jets’ Rex Ryan, who will likely never sit down and talk about their defensive philosophies over a few beers, Sony, Panasonic and Samsung are showing they can work together when it’s necessary for the health of the industry.
Recently, the three consumer electronics giants announced their collaboration with the 3D technology company Xpand 3D to develop a new standard for active 3D glasses. The name of the joint effort is the “Full HD 3D Glasses Initiative.” Together, the four companies will develop and license radio frequency (RF) and active 3D glasses technologies.
“Panasonic has been working to standardize 3D glasses technologies, and in March, we announced a joint licensing of IR system protocols with XPAND, backed by several participant companies. We are very pleased that today’s latest collaboration will incorporate our previous concept into these new standardization efforts,” says Masayuki Kozuka, general manager of media & content alliance office, corporate R&D Division, Panasonic Corporation. “We hope the expanded collaboration on this 3D standardization initiative will make a significant contribution toward accelerating the growth of 3D-related products.”
In a statement, the companies said that the licensing aspect of the collaboration is expected to be released in September 2011, and at that point the development of a new standardization for active 3D glasses will begin. In 2012, the companies expect to launch universal active 3D glasses that incorporate new IR/RF protocols. The group says that these glasses will be backwards compatible with 2011 active 3D televisions.
The collaboration’s goal is to create a 3D market that utilizes the latest technologies to facilitate the adoption of 3D by the public. “Through this alliance, we all look forward to addressing critical industry issues to enable a better consumer experience across products,” notes Jun Yonemitsu, deputy senior general manager, home entertainment development div., Sony Corporation. “We believe active 3D technology is the most suitable method to deliver full 1080p picture quality to each eye, giving consumers the 3D experience they most desire.”
