Back in July, Sony dropped a bomb that they were slapping the PlayStation brand on a 3D TV. Now, we have a release date for the product.
According to the PlayStation Blog, the 3D Display will be available starting on November 13, 2011. The monitor uses active 3D technology and is geared towards smaller gaming environments. That said, it can also be used for both 2D and 3D movies.
Priced at $499.99, the 3D Display comes packaged with one pair of 3D Glasses, the MotorStorm Apocalypse Blu-ray game, and an HDMI cable. That means that all you’ll need is the PlayStation 3, and you can start 3D gaming right out of the box. Once the gaming day is done, those glasses can be paired with most major brands of 3D TVs—as long as it has an IR emitter. Additional pairs of PlayStation 3D glasses can be had for $69.99 each.
A huge hook is SimulView, a two-player feature that provides each player with their own full (2D) HD screen while wearing the 3D glasses for the 3D Display. Not all of Sony’s 3D games support this feature. Sony says that games will be added in the future. However, at launch SimulView will work with MotorStorm Apocalypse, Gran Turismo 5, Killzone 3, and Super Stardust HD.
Other features include Edge LED backlighting, a full 1080p HD image, a 240Hz refresh rate, and an integrated subwoofer. It also has two HDMI 1.4 inputs and one component cable input, plus a stereo headphone output.
