Sony recently announced PS3 price cuts, as well as a $399 40GB model.
So we just reported (minutes ago!) that HD DVD was crowing about it’s increase in player sales. Now it seems like Blu-ray is giving them a run for their PR money—by putting the word out that PlayStation 3 players have jumped almost 300 percent.
Game News says that the PlayStation brand in general enjoyed a 178 percent increased over Thanksgiving week. Over the past year, sales are up 245 percent.
The big number, however, is that PS3 sales are up 298 percent since November 2. Much of that success comes from the new $499 price tag (for 80GB), as well as the $399 40GB model. There are also a slew of hot new games, such as “Guitar Hero III” and exclusive titles like “Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune.”
With the Wii nowhere to be found, the PS3 could get an even bigger boost. Which is on your holiday wish list?

oh yeah and wait until the average person figures out they can’t play ps1 or ps2 games on the $399 package rofl!
If it really did that well its JUST for the blue ray playback, it really doesn’t have any games worth spending money on compared to xbox 360 and thats the honest truth.
“Easy on all the misleading information.”
Pot, meet kettle. I was in fact responding to your blatantly misleading information.
So I can combine personal experience with data gathered from major retailers reporting return rates, as well as anecdotal material gathered from gaming companies, all of which confirm that the 360 has a very high failure rate. And you airily wave your hands around and dismiss that and accuse me of misleading information. Do you also dismiss the $1 billion Microsoft allocated to cover the costs they’re incurring via their warranty program?
For the record, I didn’t accuse you of lying in stating that your second unit was rock solid. I accused you of lying when you said “the red light issue on the 360 has really only affected a small amount of the overall population of 360 owners” This is a patently false statement. It isn’t clear if you bought a 2nd 360 or had your broken one repaired. In the latter case, I in fact said that once they get fixed they tend to be fairly stable.
As for the Wii, I stand by my statement that its a fad. Again, most of the people I know who have one don’t play it very often once the novelty of the controls wear off, with the exception of die-hard Nintendo fans, who have no choice since Nintendo dropped support for the Gamecube. Yes, the WIi is selling like mad… is that not the definition of a fad? Tickle-Me Elmo sold like crazy too. So did Cabbage Patch dolls. Fads. Look it up.
The Wii works well in a family environment, though, I’ll give it that. A couple kids and their parents can play one of the plethora of mini-game collections (which is what most of the titles on the Wii are) and have some fun. It’d be a huge hit in front of the Christmas tree, but by easter no one will be playing it much.
Peter,
Easy on all the misleading information. I’ve seen the same articles suggesting a huge failure rate, however there are two problems with that. 1) No one hears from the 360 owners who have had no problems at all. 2) None of these articles have been able to give a reliable number that’s backed up with proof.
You accuse me of lying in stating that my second unit is rock solid for what reason other than you’re unwillingness to accept my story? You know several persons that have had to replace their 360s, I know several that haven’t. Doesn’t make either of us right, but again there hasn’t been provided any solid proof that the failure rate is anywhere near 30%. When there is, I’ll cede the argument.
Can you share what was found to have caused your lock up problem on your 360?
You are aware that you can not only control what kind of group you game with on Live but that on some games you can even mute undesired conversation, right?
You’re also aware that the 360 will upconvert 720 to 1080i or 1080p if you set it to do so, right?
Also as not everyone uses Wireless for online gaming (ethernet is still the fastest option) you could appreciate how that feature doesn’t appeal to some, right?
And lastly, the Wii remains the top selling console at this time, selling in high numbers each month.
You seem to confuse your own personal preference with fact.

It’s hard to imagine life without remote controls, but it’s been a long, strange path to the modern incarnation we know and love today.
I think asking for a $199 PS3 is a bit crazy considering you’re getting full-HD capability, a blu-ray disc player, and built in wi-fi. You get what you pay for and if you have an HDTV, $399 is a good deal, IMHO.
