Whether you’re looking for video quality that’s a bit better than YouTube to watch on your computer, or just looking for some TV content that YouTube and other video sites can’t carry, Pioneer is offering an online TV download service that has “a rich library of TV content” available.

Pioneer’s service is called SyncTV and it will require a small subscription fee. Engadget HD is reporting the fee to be $2 to $4 per channel per month, with $2 for downloaded shows outside of your subscription. I’m not sure who’s going to pay those kinds of fees to watch TV on his computer, but it does work on Macs, Windows and Linux PCs and is being offered as a beta program right now.

The company says the video is “home theater quality” as in DVD quality currently, with HD content available where possible. Similarly possible will be Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 surround sound for some programming. We know at least one of the channels will be Showtime, according to SyncTV’s press release.

Users can sign up as beta testers on the SyncTV website.

Arlen! Yes, I missed it entirely! Thank you for pointing this out! Today I got out on the other side of the bed, so no negativity....just gratitude… to folks like you that keep us critics in line and for Services like SynchTV that allow us to do cool stuff. Have a nice day everyone.

Mark while you were busy with your criticisms, you must have skipped right over the link, no doubt. Second paragraph, fifth word.  it was even highlighted in blue and said the word “SyncTV”.

“Users can sign up as beta testers on the SyncTV website. “.... why, thank you very much! And where is this website? Google gives me news articles about it, but currently I have spent more than 10 seconds searching for it… so a link would have been nice.
Now I move on to other things...(criticisms, no doubt)

Now that’s practicality at work—the input is much appreciated!

You ask “who’s going to pay those kinds of fees to watch TV on his computer”?  It really depends on your monitor.  My HTPC is hooked up to a 56” JVC HDTV.  I did a survey of my DVR and found I only watch 10 channels that I can’t get OTA.  Even at $4 a channel it would be a huge savings compared to what I’m paying DirecTV for standard definition TV.  I think there is a market for it.
