Back in March, Philips was showing off its funky Fidelio SoundSphere speakers. However, it’s not the slick design that makes this series stand out, but support for Apple’s AirPlay.
Now the company has announced plans to start shipping the Philips Fidelio SoundSphere Speakers with AirPlay, which can wirelessly stream music throughout your entire home. Each of the five flavors of speaker setup can stream music from any PC or Mac, and is also compatible with the iPod, iPhone or iPad.
The cream of the crop, the DS9800W, is coming first in July. This $799 (MSRP) system has a 5.25-inch woofer, 1-inch tweeter and 2x50-watt amp. As an added bonus, the setup also has its own separate charging station and an IR remote. It will be available in a black lacquer finish.
The other four systems will come sometime in September. The least expensive of the lot is the AD700W, which offers two speakers, a 10-watt amp and a USB port, for $229. The next step up is the $329 DS3881W. This system packs a 16-watt amp and a rechargeable battery into a donut-shaped portable speaker cabinet.
The stand-alone DS8800W (pictured) does not go mobile (unless you have AC power close by). However, the $399 system does have a 2x15-watt amp. Last, but not least, the DS6800 is basically a smaller version of the DS9800W, but without the charging station. It comes in brushed aluminum and with a smaller price tag ($499).
