Panasonic announced at the Consumer Electronics Show that social networking site Myspace will debut its Myspace TV social TV network on Panasonic’s Viera Connect Smart TV platform. Music star and Myspace partner Justin Timberlake also spoke on behalf of the new platform that allows you to remotely converse with friends while watching TV shows, movies, sports and other programs.
“Historically, TV has been a shared experience, as people gathered together to watch their favorite programs. Our belief was that we could enhance the TV experience by increasing viewers’ ability to connect to both content and each other,” said Myspace CEO Tim Vanderhook.
“We’re ready to take television and entertainment to the next step by upgrading it to the social networking experience,” said pop star and Myspace co-owner Timberlake. “Why text or email your friends to talk about your favorite programs after they’ve aired, when you could be sharing the experience with real-time interactivity from anywhere across the globe?”
Initial channels on Myspace TV will be music-focused, but will expand beyond music, to encompass movies, news, sports and reality channels. The service will launch in the first half of 2012 and will be offered across Panasonic’s Viera Connect Internet-based on-demand platform. Panasonic says the service will be accessed via a single button on a remote control.
Myspace is inviting a select audience to participate in the beta launch of its TV service through a fully integrated experience on laptop devices. To be considered for invitation, entertainment fans can submit their information at http://www.myspace.com/tv.
Panasonic also announced exclusive agreements with Flixster movie and TV service and Disney Publishing for interactive books on TV apps. Panasonic said almost 90 percent of its 2012 lineup of TVs will be web-connected products, and the company will offer an Internet browser on selected models for surfing the web on TV.
Panasonic also showed a prototype of a slick tablet for cloud services including streaming content to TVs, social networking, remote control and e-commerce.
