Panasonic’s Full HD 3D home entertainment system
As expected, Panasonic’s Full HD 3D home entertainment system, which it says is certified under the new Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) 3D standard, hit Best Buy stores this week.
Somewhat surprising is Panasonic’s announcement that the system will be sold exclusively at select Best Buy stores via its specialty Magnolia Home Theater vignettes — in other words, not off the shelves at conventional Best Buy stores.
The total combined suggested retail price of the Panasonic Full HD 3D Plasma Home Theater System components is $2,899.99.
The system includes:
- 50-inch Panasonic VIERA VT20 Plasma 3D HDTV (TC-P50VT20; suggested retail price: $2,499.95)
- One pair of Panasonic 3D Active Shutter Lens Eyewear (TY-EW3D10U)
- Panasonic BDT300 3D Blu-ray Disc Player (DMP-BDT300; suggested retail price: $399.95)
Panasonic adds that additional pairs of 3D eye wear will be available with a suggested retail price of $149.95 and the individual components of the system will also be sold separately.
Why Magnolia?
“Best Buy is uniquely positioned to bring this [3D] experience to life for our customers through our Blue Shirts and Geek Squad Agents,” says Michael Vitelli, president, Americas, Best Buy. “We are thrilled to partner with Panasonic as it allows us to be the first retailer to offer this complete 3D home theater solution and underscores our promise to always deliver on the latest and greatest technology.”
The VT20 and the BDT300 are Best Buy exclusive models and are equivalent to the VT25 series and the BDT350, respectively.
In addition to the 50-inch class size, the Panasonic Full HD 3D Home Theater System will also be available in a 54-inch class, 58-inch class and 65-inch class and Panasonic says suggested retail pricing and availability will be announced at a later date.
Panasonic and DirecTV recently announced a strategic relationship. DirecTV’s HD 3D channels, powered by Panasonic, will offer a 24/7 3D DIRECTV Cinema and pay per view event, a 24/7 3D DirecTV on Demand channel and a free 3D entertainment channel.
Interesting, looks like HD 3D for the consumer is starting up. This sounds intriguing, even moreso since it’s exclusive to BB. At the minimum, it would be worth demoing in-store. However, why does the package deal include only one pair of 3D glasses? What’s the point of a new whiz-bang HTS if it can’t be shared? Better factor in extra glasses at $150 a pop. That’s a shame as it should’ve included 2 glasses to sweeten the deal.
