With so many CE devices streaming online goodies, it’s hard to appreciate your old Blu-ray player. However, a little company called Orb Networks wants to make that old device new again—or at least start streaming some new content.
The company just announced Orb BR, software that incorporates streaming media into any web-connected Blu-ray player. Pop in the $20 disc, and soon you’ll be streaming the likes of Netflix, Hulu Plus, YouTube, Amazon Video on Demand, Comedy Central, and more.
If you’re looking to get your smartphone in on the action, the Orb BR is also compatible with the iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Android devices, and even your home computer.
Aside from adding that entertainment to your daily routine, the Orb BR promises HD output at 720p and 1080p resolution. Very interesting!
“The combined cost of a Blu-ray player and Orb BR software is less expensive than most of the other Internet TV solutions, like Boxee and Google TV, while providing more capabilities,” said Joe Costello, Orb’s CEO. “With more than eight million connected Blu-ray players and 40 million PS3 players already in homes, the market opportunity for Orb BR is huge.”
Orb says that the Orb BR software will be available on the Orb website starting late next month.
