We generally know OPPO as a maker of high-performance Blu-ray players. Now, the company is introducing something new, but it’s not what you’d think.
Now the company is turning some of its efforts towards the headphone market. However, these aren’t just any headphones; they’re planar magnetic headphones.
The company has spent years on the newly announced lineup, working with audio and acoustics engineers, chemical and material scientists, and audiophiles.
OPPO will first introduce the PM-1, a pair of headphones designed with the high-end listener in mind. It includes a planar magnetic driver, with a 7-layer diaphragm and an FEM-optimized high energy Neodymium magnet system. That same diaphragm also has a spiraling pattern of flat conductors etched on both sides, with a double-sided design to accommodate twice the number of conductors in the magnetic field.
According to the company, this type of configuration will result in “higher sensitivity, better damping, and even drive force.”
Featuring an over-the-ear, open back design, the PM-1 is also lightweight and comfortable, thanks to handpicked lambskin on the headband and ear pads. Expect the PM-1 to be available in limited quantities starting in mid-April, for $1,099.
Sometime this summer, the company also plans to release the PM-2, a similar model with the same planar magnetic headphone technologies. The big difference is a few different materials are used on this model, which allows OPPO to bring down the price to $699.
OPPO is also hinting to the release of a dedicated headphone amplifier, known as the HA-1. Pricing and other product information will come at a later date.
